Revenue- and Traffic-generating WiFi Hotspots

for your business or resort by NomadISP

Connectivity Solutions from Sky Vista and WildBlue Enterprise

Introduction

Finally, a simple, all-inclusive WiFi Hotspot offering available virtually everywhere!

NomadISP provides a complete, turnkey WiFi Hotspot solution to the market. Unlike other WiFi offerings, the Anywhere Hotspot service is complete – consisting of all components, service and support needed for successful deployment. The NomadISP WiFi hotspot package is ready to connect to any available broadband connection, including satellite internet service providers such as Sky Vista.

And best of all, the product is self-managed, requiring no interaction from the site owner (that is, the person or company hosting the Hotspot service) to sell this service to their customers, making this a win-win-win solution for all involved. All the customer has to do is to flip open their laptop or PDA, try to connect to the Internet via your WiFi hotspot connection, and they will be taken immediately to a web page customized for your business and provided by NomadISP. Once there, the customer can make a decision about how much time they wish to use and then pay for that use right then and there with a credit card. Again, this requires no interaction or intervention from the business operator.

What is a WiFi Hotspot?
WiFi Hotspot services are a fast growing business segment. It is a wireless technology similar to that in cordless phones. WiFi enabled computers can wirelessly send and receive Internet data anywhere within range of the access point (gateway). The AH-3 generally transmits its signal w
ith a radius of 1,500 feet in all directions from the gateway. The AH-3 is recommended for up to 10–15 concurrent users. The newest model of NomadISP's Anywhere Hotspot System offers 3 times the processing power and the newest version of their firmware makes integrating an AH-3 in repeater mode a snap.

A Great Revenue Generator for Resort Operators

For owners of campgrounds, marinas, truck stops, and other locations with frequent short-term visitors, providing high-speed Internet access via a WiFi Hotspot is a competitive advantage; WiFi access to the Internet is increasingly an expectation of campers, truckers, and other travelers. Many travelers now plan their itinerary with WiFi access to the Internet will only visit locations where that is provided. Most are willing to pay for the service.

Great revenue generator for Site Owners
A site owner offering this service with usage by as few as two people per day can earn over $250/mo – easily recovering the monthly broadband service fees based on the generous revenue-share program administered by NomadISP. Better yet, with as few as five campers per day paying approximately $7/day for usage, the site owner could earn over $600/mo. in commissions from NomadISP - more than four (4) times the cost for the StarBand monthly service!

Wolf Lodge RV Campground NomadISP WiFi hotspot powered by a 1.2 meter SkyVista satellite Internet system

Above, you can see the AH-3 antenna assembly at the lower right on the Wolf Lodge building.  Below - The shot shows the SkyVista 1.2 meter dish on the roof behind the building facade. You can just make out the AH-3 assembly against the taller aspen to the right.

The photo above shows the complete AH-3 antenna assembly with it's attached router and radio. This compact package requires no AC power - it gets its power from what is commonly called a 'power-over-Ethernet' (PoE)injector. This device is located inside the building and looks much like any other 'wall-wart' power supply, but in this case, it has connections for the non-powered data connection and the PoE connection to the outside antenna/router assembly.

Once again, let me stress that no computer is required for this system. Guests can access the internet through the custom web page provided to Wolf Lodge by NomadISP. The Wolf Lodge office (seen as the building just to the right of the AH-3 antenna) enjoys its own private connection to the Internet via a secure wireless access point operating outside the NomadISP system.

StarLAN Consulting Services provided all the design, installation, and  network engineering for the site.

What's In It For Me?

There are two basic economic models upon which you can base your WiFi hotspot: pay-per-use (fee charged for use) and free (no fee). Let's examine each model to see what advantages they confer.

Pay-per-use. This economic model presumes the following:

  • that you have guests/customers who are more than willing to pay for internet access.

  • that you have sufficient turnover in guests/customer usage to provide a decent flow of revenues.

If this model is true for your situation, then you will at a minimum recover your broadband access subscription fees. A good flow of traffic will actually turn a profit in your customers' use of your hotspot. If you are also using the same connection for your office  / private network, then you will essentially be getting your services for free. Using this model and the NomadISP product, you are free to choose the fee structure for your hotspot, and you may adjust it to suit your circumstances at any time. StarLAN Consulting Services can provide an Excel spreadsheet that will allow you to examine the revenue flows from a variety of pay-per-use scenarios.

Free. This economic model presumes the following:

  • that your guests/customers have the expectation that your service will be free.

  • that your broadband access subscription fees will be offset by the increased traffic and goodwill generated by free internet access.

  • that your free WiFi hotspot will induce your guests/customers to stick around and make use of other goods and services that you may be offering.

If this model is true for your situation, then you must at a minimum recover an additional $160 / $200 per month in revenue from your goods and services to cover the cost of your broadband subscription.

Now, every business is different. Give this one some serious thought before settling on a particular model. But the upshot is that you can alter your model at any time to suit your business conditions.
